//வாழ்கைக்கு காதல் மட்டும் இருந்தா போதும்னு சொல்றவங்க லெப்ட்டுக்கா திரும்பி போயிடுங்க.//

//மேல்சாதிப் பெண்ணை பணத்திற்காக திருமணம் செய்து, கடைசியில் பெற்றோரிடம் விலை பேரம் பேசி, பணம் பிடுங்கிய பின் பெண்ணை அனுப்பி வைக்கும் சம்பவங்கள் இங்கு ஏராளம். //

//இவங்க கணக்குல இது தான் சாதி மறுப்பு திருமணம். மறுத்தால் ஆதிக்க சாதி வெறி பெற்றோராக அடையாளப்படுத்தப்படுவீர்....என்று சொல்லிக்கொண்டு முடிக்கிறேன்..//

It is a clever ploy for casteists like caste leaders to mix both category of cases in order to tar the whole community of dalits with the same brush to show all dalits as low living cheats and others are high living honest men. You are innocently falling into their trap. Wake up.

Based on what you are saying dalith people don't have any education, good habits, Good family back ground? You people don't want to these people get education and come out of their poverty! now look around they are the highly educated, well behaved decent people. Correct your mentality first, there only it starts the " Jathi veri" I don't even want to talk about the out come of the case.

I never said that. All these issues prop up, when the lover lacks these qualities. No parents shall accept a guy who lacks qualities irrespective of the caste he belongs to.

I've drawn attention to 2 kinds of such marriages.

1. Between a dalit man and a non-dalit woman - there are problems of match: he is from dalit caste - he may be a last year student like Udumalippettai Shankar; or a pharmacist employed in a Govt hospital (a real incident in Tirunelveli)

2. The other kind of marriage have similar mis-match with one difference here: the boy is from the same caste; or any other caste except dalits.

You've have replied to me mixing both kinds. Please tell me why dalits are killed whereas with the same qualifications (or disqualifications), although non-dalit boy is denied marriage he does not get killed in broad day light. Why? That was my question to you.

Here is your response to the Anonymous: ''No parents shall accept a guy who lacks qualities irrespective of the caste he belongs to.''

All know that. No parent will accept a guy who lacks qualities irrespective of the caste he belongs to; but why are not murdering such a guy if he is from their own caste or upper caste?

Politicians who lead caste factions like Ramadoss, Eshwaran and others want to avoid my questions by cleverly merging such cases as Shankar's or the Chakkiliar boy (in his case, he is more qualified, gainfully employed in a salaried permanent Govt job and a professional) and she is below him) the politicians merge these cases with the love marriages or elopements by dalit boys and non dalit girls. You've done the same immoral act as the politicians have done. In the blog ostensibly to talk about the court case, you attempt to mix both kinds.

Udumalaippettai Shankar did not fall for the marriage. The love blossomed w/o any pre-arrangement or motivation on his part. There is no record to show he demanded money or had motives of keeping her as ransom to make the lives of her relatives hell. If there are, I will withdraw all comments here and apologize to you.

Despite a lot of talk about love and your summary rejection of people who talk about it (Get out from here etc.), it does exist dear. Certain minds are inclined by nature to love. Certain minds calculate and want their brides in an arranged marriages. Arranged marriages are conditional. They are arranged with a number of do-s and don't-s and other conditions. Love is unconditional. But both exist in society. You as well as Shanker have a right to live in society happily. But you want to cut short the right to Shanker by murdering him.

Kaushalya should not have loved him being sure her parents would not accept. It's your argument and so many others too. Can you assume she wasn't aware of it? Does she know her parents more, or you? Yes, she does pretty well. She wanted him to be her life partner and he, her despite all overwhelming odds - caste fanaticism and getting killed any time by such human mosters ! Finally the odds won; he was felled brutally in front of a hundreds of passers-by. The context is heart-rending. It was his birthday and she suggested she should buy a shirt for him out of her earnings (she was working then). She took him to the nearby town and when they were returning home to celebrate, they killed him and maimed her.
Matter could have ended giving victory to her side.

But a few people did not want to end it. So, it is not you, but those few who ultimately won and justice was done. The human kindness or humanity lives in the world because of such ''a few people'' According to Valluvar, ''If such people are not there, it is self-destruction for all of us as a society!''

Society is not as we want it but as it wants itself. Love does exist. If you can't appreciate its existence. it won't hide itself or cease to exist. As long as man lives on earth, so long love blossoms between a man and a woman. It's God's will. It's the way He has created us. Inexorable divine law - we can't escape from its clutches.

//....but why are not murdering such a guy if he is from their own caste or upper caste? //
There are several cases of violence cases involving same caste love or eloping type of marriages. Anyway its a million dollar question. This is how society reacts. The intensity of anger and opposition is high in inter caste marriage. Murdering Dalit boy for love is not the only reaction sir, Parent committed suicide in case of Elavarasan-Divya case.

// Certain minds are inclined by nature to love. //
Most of them are infatuation and not love. Love and break ups are quiet common now aday...what is the inclination for it ? I believe in love after commitment or after marriage ie., after consummation.

// She wanted him to be her life partner and he, her despite all overwhelming odds - caste fanaticism and getting killed any time by such human mosters ! //

I do not support killing anyone, even if its a love trap.

// But a few people did not want to end it. So, it is not you, but those few who ultimately won and justice was done. //

Yes justice was done.Agreed. How should a parent of a girl child take it ? 18 வயசு ஆச்சுன்னா தண்ணி தெளிச்சு விட்டுடனும்...

Intensity of anger and opposition is well known. Everyone has the right to anger; most of all, parents when it comes to their daughter's marriage if it is gone wrong against their will. We're not talking about that. We are questioning whether they can kill a dalit boy for marrying their daughter as they opposed it when she asked for it? Their intensity of anger and opposition can be shown differently, in a human way, if not humane way, but never by murdering people.

Elevarasan-Divya case is not apposite here. Since you have dragged it, let me say that her father committed suicide. Why? Only because her daughter married a dalit boy - that means, if she had married a vanniyar boy out of love, and, and if they didn't accept the liasion, still they wouldn't go to the extent of committing suicide. They knew quite well no shame is attached if her daughter loves and marries a vanniyar man, however much the fellow is bad.

The one and only factor that decides all such cases is the fact of the boy being a dalit. Everything else can be dismissed by the parents themselves as time moves on.

May be that's how the society views them. These views are not their imaginary views but what they see in reality in most of the cases. The onus lies on them to improvise themselves. If it requires time, then the acceptance of the same shall also require some time. Same Dalit boy, if he is well settled, then there are so many cases parents accepted it.

You don't understand me; or not want to understand me. I want you to see their belief. ''That's how they live'' is not the honest reply, or any reply at all. If I say ISI believe all kafirs should be beheaded, will you respond to me ''That's how they believe''?

We should not leave all beliefs as morally and socially acceptable. To look down upon certain people who live among us sharing the space from time immorial and treat them untouchable i.e any contact with them will pollute us - like building a wall to prevent them, preventing them from entering the temple to worship etc - can we dismiss all - that's how they believe? You can review and reply to these question: Which belief is acceptable and which, not? Don't we have the moral duty to condemn anti-social belief or not?

If your daughter elopes with a guy against your wishes, I am not concerned with your belief at all Mr Local Tamil (What's your good name please?). You can believe anything. I am least bothered about that; or the society has little concern with what you believe. But if you turn your anti-social belief into action like murdering the guy, all of us are concerned. So, the point of reference is not the believe in my second para, but acts like murder based upon the belief.

Go to police; file FIR, proceed in a court of law against the guy. Fight the case out and get the guy locked up by law. This is the way. Not dispatching hired killers or yourself, and brutally murdering him - is to be repelled. If the belief - I and you have referred to above - is the cause, shouldn't we condemn that too?

PV said...

ISI believe that all non-Muslims are kafirs who have no right to live. They should be eliminated; so they should be beheaded. This is the belief system of ISI.

Here, Vanniars, Thevars, Pillais (the three groups who are daggars drawn with dalits) believe that the dalits don't have a right to be equal to us in anything. They may be educated and employed. Still dalits are dalits who cannot even dream of sitting before us, or dreaming to be equal to us. This is their belief. (Every other thing as they are eloping with our daughters and holding our daughters as ransom is constructed on this belief).

So, you see there's little difference between the ISI and your groups. The whole world oppose the ISI. Similarly, the whole State of TN should oppose the vicious belief.

There are 25 crores of dalits in India, and out of them some crores occur in Tamil Nadu. You tie them all up to conclude they live a low life contemptible to you. You're generalising them. Exactly Ramadoss is doing. When he says the dalits elope with Vanniar girls; the dalits are worthless guys; their aim is to extract money by using the girls - I agree with him, on a case by case basis. But his motive is not to treat all as a case by case basis, but using some cases, to create a general dalit-hatred in Tamil society - he has succeeded in creating the hatred among Vanniyars but I am not sure the whole TN bought his specious theory of ''all dalits are human animals'' - except you who have bought it as evidence in the quote above.

If you say all dalits are ugly in mind and body and they should improve themselves so as to bring us to an acceptable degree to you, you want us to believe all Vanniyars, all Thevars and all Pillais (I am referring to them only as they are popular haters of Dalits) are most civilised, most cultured, most worthy as human beings.

You must be living in a world of your own. I stagger to imagine a software engineer who is a creation of modern world, with such Medieval mindset.

Bye.

//Kowsalya married him by discontinuing her studies..Why can't she wait and convince her parents ? //

Kowsalya is an individual. She fell in love with a senior student of the same college. Her family opposed. She couldn't continue the study because the family was sponsoring her. When the sponsors cut off supply, she had to stand on her own legs. Between study, parents and the man she chose to live with for ever, she preferred her man.

It is her own decision. Neither you nor I can debate it at all. On the other hand, if she had been forced to discontinue studies while she could pursue it, by anyone, then, we can hold that person responsible.

Tell me first, who has asked her to discontinue despite her wanting to go to college? Can you produce any proof that Shankar or his family member forced her, or induced her, to discontinue?

PV said...

She took up job at an young age which means when she and her husband are settled, it's possible to resume the study. Her natal family disowned her. She had her husband only who was living with 2 younger bros who are in schools only. Husband in third year. The family needs an earning member. She took upon the responsibility. He got campus placement and was telling her that he would go to Madras and then set up a family with her. That was the assurance in suspended animation when murder occurred. After the murder, what did she do?

Fantastic acts. She struggled in hospital and with the help of society, recovered and told interviewers she would not desert her husband family meaning she would bring up the husbands' bros. She pursued the case vigorously. She campaigned against honor killings in TN. She stood in the witness box and gave valuable evidence. On the day of the delivery of judgement, the police arranged a tv for her and a safe space for her to watch the pronouncement of the judgment. After that, she told reporters that she would not allow her mom go scot-free because, she knew quite well, that her mom instigated the murder. For her innocent man, she struggled and won (and of course others helped).

It's impossible for me to praise her valor and courage - both my Tamil and English word powers fail me. I feel small, very very small before this young woman who is hardly 25.

Excellent Vinaygam...for your matured as well as valid arguments.
Kannagai and Kovalan story is a Myth. This Udumalai incident is real,in fact, more than Silappathikaarm!

Mr. P. Vinayagam,
Your thoughts are brilliant and your logic is hard to break.
Your ideas fit well in a Western soceity.

You know very well about Indian soceity & Govt; Here, you cannot enter a temple to do pooja; Not just that, you cannot even setup a Tea shop in a Muslim dominated area. You cannot enter sea and do fishing and survive.

Unfortunately, Indian soceity is tied to caste. Indian govt is long dead and does not care about commoners; Common people have to take care of themselves. If some of the common people took care of themselves by a Caste association, What is your problem???

It is the collective failure of Indian govt by not providing equal oppurtunity to everyone.

In future, If caste is important to Parent, they will not send their wards to colleges.

Prospective students will have to work and support themselves and study; In that case, they can live / marry/ f*ck anyone they wish.

Kowsalya should have done the same; she should not even join the college in the first place, which was paid by her father.
She should have vacated the home after +2 and married anyone she wishes; Nobody stops her.

p.Vinayagam Sir,

"If you say all dalits are ugly in mind and body and they should improve themselves so as to bring us to an acceptable degree to you"

You are trying to politicise by whipping up passions similar to what VCk and PMK do. Iam not trying to paint everyone with same brush. in fact I have said about Daliths who are settled are accepted and the marriages of that kind attract no opposition. Caste is not the only criteria for non acceptance.

I am speaking from the mind of a parent and their concerns are genuine and cannot be thrown away.

"If your daughter elopes with a guy against your wishes, I am not concerned with your belief at all Mr Local Tamil (What's your good name please?)"

I will be happy to accept any settled guy from any casye in Hindu Community and eloping situation occurrence probability is low. iam Kabilan.

"There are 25 crores of dalits in India, and out of them some crores occur in Tamil Nadu. You tie them all up to conclude they live a low life contemptible to you. "

I never said that. These are theatrics which are used by so called rationalist and dalit groups to whip up passions. Very old technique, but sadly it still works.

Perceptions about oneself or one community cannot change by forcing him to change. Thus can never happen. This is what you are trying to say. This is what I was referring to belief.

If your perception about me is an idiot, I cannot force you to change. Instead, I have to try to change your perception by my attitude and behaviour.

Whether you like it or not, this is how the society works. Its not anyone's business or right to decide about who Iam giving my daughter to. Its the decision of the family and outsiders have nothing to say on this.

Killing a human being is never justified whether it is Shankar or Swathi or Naveena.

You say you’re not trying to paint all Dalits with the same brush but in the next sentence you say you’ll accept a Dalit who are well settled for your son-in-law. In your view, an average Dalit, or Dalits as a caste group, are unworthy by nature and they should strive to come up to attain a state to your approval. There lies the vice of the feeling ‘’Holier than thou’’.
Why does it become important only if the guy is a dalit? Everywhere in TN why does it become important for a dalit guy to deserve a non-dalit bride? Why don’t we simply say any man should deserve a woman (he should be able to afford her a safe and secure life emotionally and materially, it means) ?

If she refuses, you ought to adopt the Tamil brahminical way of ‘’thalai muluguthal’’. Forget her. Let her live her life and suffer. Tamil Brahmins don’t kill the boy. The separation of daughter is painful but killing is not the way to get rid of the pain. It adds to more pain.

You talk about ‘’perceptions’’ as unchangeable reality. No you’re wrong here. Perceptions are not created either by the parents concerned or God. Perceptions were created by the caste society – a group of individuals led by vested interests withIN the caste. Thousands and thousands of migrants from Dharmapuri and Salem districts – all Vanniyars live along with Dalits from various districts in Delhi slums. In Mumbai also. The Vanniyars migrated during the 60s. Both live happily for more than half a century. Where are those perceptions you talked about? Similarly in Malaysia and South Africa. The British colonialists took both Vanniyars and Parayars and Naidus from Madras Presidency to South Africa and Fiji as indentured labor. (Bonded coolies). Now they’re living together as free and prosperous families, without all your vicious ‘’perceptions’’ there. How comes?
Perceptions, being artificial, can be changed. You can contribute also.

Don’t club Shankar, Swati and Naveena cases. That is the malicious propaganda created by politicians and others for their own interests. I’ve already told you not to do that. Still you’re at the mischievous game.

Swati was not killed by a hired gang. She was killed by a lone wolf who happened to be her acquaintance and reportedly spurned by her. No caste angle involved. Caste angle was added by a Brahmin fool in Facebook which was mindlessly lapped up by the celebrities of the same caste.

Naveena case is also a case of two individuals. To make it a general habit among Dalit youths of the State is the foul political game. Politicians can resort to any method to create a vote bank. But why you? Why do you equate all cases and force inferences?
Shankar case is different. The girl didn’t elope with him. She asked for permission and when it was denied, she settled the matter by a temple-marriage (the image is everywhere to wrench our hearts). He didn’t threaten her saying if she didn’t marry him, he would commit suicide or do away with her. It was a mutual love. She was not locked up anywhere. She could have walked out if she had wanted to sever the relationship on pressure from her parents. He was aware of her unrelenting casteist family and the marriage would not be an easy life for both – thereat of being killed hanging on their heads. Still both got married. There lies ‘’something’’ in such audacious marriages in the face of imminent dangers to life of both – that’s beyond your ability to comprehend. To equate Shanker with Naveena and Swati is the unkindest cut of all. Shanker case can be equated to the Tirunvelveli case.

Be optimistic: We can and will change.

You're trying to be over-smart but failed. Because you are correct really.

If a parent has the casteist killer urge (that means he would kill anyone to protect the honor of his caste - the so-called honor killing) he should not send her daughter to a place where lower caste men work or study. He should keep her daughter at home and safely arrange a boy within his caste and marry her to him. In rural TN, girls are debarred from going to school from the day they attain puberty.

Not long ago it was the practice to imprison women at home for fear letting them out would spoil them and bring dishonor to the family and caste.

Between caste purity and modern life, take your pick.

This was my reply previously and didn't mention dalit
//I will be happy to accept any settled guy from any caste in Hindu Community//

Irrespective of the community, the guy should be capable to run a family and lead a decent life.

// You talk about ‘’perceptions’’ as unchangeable reality. No you’re wrong here. Perceptions are not created either by the parents concerned or God. Perceptions were created by the caste society //

Perceptions regarding caste are transferred from the society and nurtured by one's own experience on the same. Hence change in perception cannot be forced.

// Why don’t we simply say any man should deserve a woman (he should be able to afford her a safe and secure life emotionally and materially, it means) ? //

Secure life Materially really matters ! If that's there, I have no issues.

// Between caste purity and modern life, take your pick. //
Modern or Western Life ? I do not subscribe to caste purity.

Brilliant, Dr. P. Vinayagam.

I too want to throw away the caste purity.
But.....
I cannot get seat in a college of my wish, even if I fully qualify and obtain all required marks.
I cannot even setup a Teashop in Muslim dominated area.
I cannot go into sea and do fishing, if I am not a fisherman.
I cannot enter a temple and do my pooja.....
I cannot get a MLA seat in any of the caste dominated areas, even in SC majority areas, I cannot get a MLA seat. Forget about becoming MLA.

When the entire Indian soceity revolves around caste, what is the option you gave to Kowsalya's father??? Nothing.

As I said, Kowsalya and Shankar should have run from that rural area. In most of the case, such women who run away and elope are sold into Redlight areas.

Mr. P. Vinayagam, Pick your choices now. Rural casteist life or Redlight areas.

Enjoy Maan!!!!

''To elope'' 'To run away'' have the same meaning here. Use one.
I am neither an MBBS nor a Ph.D

You've completely misunderstood my point.

I used the word ''purity''. Caste purity. It is different from caste.

All of your questions relate to caste. Here the issue of honor killing comes from people want to preserve the caste purity namely they don't want to mix with the lower beings like Dalits.

Caste purity leads to all crimes in society against lower castes. So, if you ask me to pick up between caste and caste purity, I shall pick up caste. What about you?

//Irrespective of the community, the guy should be capable to run a family and lead a decent life.

Again you're evading the issue here. Which kind of groom will you choose for your daughter? is not the question here. If she asks your permission to marry a guy with whom she is relationship for many years, and you deny it for the reason stated by you, and then she goes ahead in marrying him because she is sure she cannot imagine any other man as her husband - what will you do? Will you engage hired killers to finish the couple?

In our society, many perceptions were transferred from past generations. We have changed them where we needed. If certain perceptions continue, it is obvious we don't need to change. My argument is if such perceptions which are not being changed, harm the society, it is time we examined them and drop them off. For such examination, all should help, including you. Not by force, but relentless campaigning and attaching a social stigama to such habits as honor killing.

Security in married life for girl is a universal desire - in America to Australia, Kashmir to Kanyakumar, this desire is empressed. But we are killing a man who can give security to our daughter and forcing another man on her. Can she be secure in the forced man?

Whether you like it or not, time moves on; society on its own changes. It is the law of life. We may like to travel by bullock cart now; but time has removed such transport.

If you say you don't want such modernity, still it will happen. You can go to the past and live in the past and force your choice of a guy for her to marry w/o caring for her mind as to whether she accepts him, you are a barbarian. You may claim it is her life that you would ensure well. But it is her life that she has to live: if she does feel that another man, not your choice, is her right choice, you have no role to play in her life. Whether she is your daughter or someone else, no one can force a woman to live an unwilling life.

Treat your children when they reach an age of maturity as individuals, not your eternal bonded slaves.
